Erudite and moving
5 Punkte 5 von 5 Punkten
This book is very personal and at the same time impressively erudite. The starting point of Hustvedt's investigation is a strange experience she had in 2006: In the middle of a speech she gave in memory of her deceased father her body began shaking violently from the neck down. She was still able to speak, yet the shaking of her lower body was uncontrollable.
This raises the question of identity. What is a self? Can she say "I was shaking", when in fact the shaking occurred entirely against her will? This problem sets Hustvedt off on an eclectic exploration of philosophy (the mind-body problem), psychology and psychiatry, neurology and brain science. She does not develop a stringent line of questioning; rather, she keeps approaching the same set of questions from various angles. She describes a plethora of different conditions - hysteria (or conversion disorder, as it is usually called today), anosognosia (denial of illness), mirror touch synesthesia, to name only a few - all of which serve to show that a person's identity may split, be dissociative and more fragile than we would ordinarily tend to think. One of the most compelling parts of her book is her deconstruction of the mind-body dichotomy; she shows that in many cases it is simply not possible to say whether an illness is organic or mental; in the age of brain science, this whole distinction does not seem to make sense any more. This does not mean, however, that Hustvedt would adopt the position held by some neurologists that a person's identity can be reduced to their set of neurons. Quite to the contrary, she shows how identity is forever elusive, both inside and outside of us, in the people we interact with, in the words we speak - words that we own and that at the same time own us.
Hustvedt is widely-read in neurological literature, but she discusses the science in a way that is intelligible to the lay reader. Also, she combines her survey of scientific research with very personal, intimate stories about her family and her own history of illness. This is a refreshing combination, which makes her book a thought-provoking and a very touching reading experience.

A bank of clouds was assembling on the not-so-distant horizon but journalist/mountaineer Jon Krakauer, standing on the summit of Mount Everest, saw nothing that "suggested that a murderous storm was bearing down." He was wrong. The storm, which claimed five lives and left countless more--including Krakauer's--in guilt-ridden disarray, would also provide the impetus for Into Thin Air, Krakauer's epic account of the May 1996 disaster. With more than 250 black-and-white photographs taken by various expedition members and an enlightening new postscript by the author, the Illustrated Edition shows readers what this tragic climb looked like and potentially provides closure for Krakauer and his detractors.
"I have no doubt that Boukreev's intentions were good on summit day," writes Krakauer in a postscript dated August 1998. "What disturbs me, though, was Boukreev's refusal to acknowledge the possibility that he made even a single poor decision. Never did he indicate that perhaps it wasn't the best choice to climb without gas or go down ahead of his clients." As usual, Krakauer supports his points with dogged research and a good dose of humility. But rather than continue the heated discourse that has raged since Into Thin Air's denouncement of the guide Boukreev, Krakauer's tone is conciliatory; he points most of his criticism at G. Weston DeWalt, who co-authored The Climb, Boukreev's version of events. And in a touching conclusion, Krakauer recounts his last conversation with the late Boukreev, in which the two weathered climbers agreed to disagree about certain points. Krakauer had great hopes to patch things up with Boukreev, but the Russian later died in an avalanche on another Himalayan peak, Annapurna I. Krakauer further buries the ice axe by donating his share of royalties from sales of The Illustrated Edition to the Everest '96 Memorial Fund, which aids various environmental and humanitarian charities. -- Rob McDonald

A real thriller!
5 Punkte 5 von 5 Punkten
It's really hard to put this book down once you start reading! Even if you know the outcome of the events described in the book, it reads like a thriller! It is full of surprising turns of events occuring to the reader just as unexpected as they must have done to the climbers themselves.
My personal favourite mountaineering book of all time - a chilling and harrowing story of the tragedies on Everest in May 1996
5 Punkte 5 von 5 Punkten
My personal favourite mountaineering book of all time. Krakauer provides a day-by-day journal to tell the chilling, harrowing and controversial story about the 1996 Everest season when 12 climbers were killed. He describes the trek to Everest Base Camp, the acclimatization climbs to Camps One, Two and Three, the final climb by 34 climbers towards the Everest Summit, the descent to the South Col, the killer storm, the rescues and failed rescues, and the descent off the mountain. The Illustrated Edition contains almost 250 b/w photos to bring the story to visual life. The photos are by Jon Krakauer, Neil Beidleman, Klev Schoening, Scott Fisher and others.

"In March 1996, Outside magazine sent [Jon Krakauer] to participate in, and write about a guided ascent of Mount Everest", on Rob Hall's Adventure Consultants expedition. In addition to Hall's eight clients, Scott Fisher's Mountain Madness guided expedition also had eight clients. Scott Fisher: "We've got the big E figured out ... we've built a yellow brick road to the summit." Krakauer did reach the Everest summit on May 10, 1996 at 13:10. Worrying about his dwindling oxygen, he left the summit after just five minutes, finally making it back to his tent on the South Col at about 18:45, "more exhausted than I'd ever been in my life." "The storm abruptly metastasized into a full-blown hurricane, and the visibility dropped to less than twenty feet ... nineteen men and women were stranded up on the mountain by the storm, caught in a desperate struggle for their lives."

Two guides, two Sherpas, and seven clients had reached the South Col, but "staggered blindly around in the storm, growing ever more exhausted and hypothermic." In a small break in the storm, Camp Four was slightly visible. "Pittman, Fox, Weathers, and Namba were too feeble to walk", so Neil Beidleman, Klev Schoening, Lene Gammelgard, the two Sherpas, and Mike Groom stumbled off into the storm, making it back to the tents on May 11 at 00:45. Fisher's guide Anatoli Boukreev had descended to Camp Four in advance of his clients, and was the only strong climber left. Boukreev courageously single-handedly attempted to brave the storm to rescue the missing climbers, but had to return to the tents. But Boukreev didn't give up. He went out again by himself and was able to find the climbers, and brought back first Charlotte Fox and then Sandy Pittman and Tim Madsen. Yasuko Namba was dead and Beck was a lost cause.

Rob Hall waited for Doug Hansen to reach the summit at around 16:00, but Hansen turned into a "zombie" on the descent. Andy Harris picked up oxygen from the South Summit and walked back up towards Hall and Hansen. "at 4:43 on the morning of May 11 ... [Hall] had descended to the South Summit. And at that point neither Hansen nor Harris was with him." The continuing storm on May 11 stopped the Sherpa's rescue attempt. Rob's pregnant wife in New Zealand was patched through to speak to Rob late on May 11, " 'I love you. Sleep well, my sweetheart. Please don't worry too much.' These would be the last words anyone would her him speak."

Scott Fisher was not very strong on summit day, and reached the summit late at 15:40. Lopsang Jangbu Sherpa was able to help Fisher descend, but he collapsed just below the Balcony about 400m above the South Col. Anatoli Boukreev reached Fisher late on the evening of May 11. "Down suit is unzipped, pulled off his shoulder, one arm is outside clothing. There is nothing I can do. Scott is dead."

Amongst the tragedy, there was a ray of joy. Beck Weathers collapsed on the South Col late on May 10 and was left for dead. Miraculously he regained consciousness on May 11 and stumbled back to Camp Four at 16:35 with his "bare right hand, naked to the frigid wind and grotesquely frostbitten ... outstretched ... [looking like] a mummy in a low-budget horror film." Beck miraculously survived the night and the IMAX team with David Breashears and Ed Viesturs helped him descend to Camp Two the next day. Lt. Colonel Madan Khatri Chhetri rescued Beck from Camp Two in his helicopter on May 13.

Krakauer's writing is excellent, providing enough information, but keeping the story tight and to the point. He provides his inner thoughts and comments candidly on his own performance and mistakes, and the other clients and guides. Rob Hall's last minutes speaking to his wife are almost too heartbreaking to read. The photos are absolutely excellent. Although Krakauer is critical of Anatoli Boukreev's guiding practices, he fully acknowledges Toli's extraordinary performance in single handedly rescuing three clients during the storm. For a rebuttal from Anatoli Boukreev, read The Climb.
Unbedingt lesen!

Insgesamt sehr lesenswert.

Alice Schroeder?s The Snowball: Warren Buffett and the Business of Life might well be one of the most important books you will ever read -- particularly in a period when the world's various economies appear to be entering freefall. This arm-straining (at nearly a thousand pages) but utterly fascinating book has already -- against all the odds -- achieved an astonishing level of success, given its initially daunting appearance. But it will only take a chapter or so for most readers to see just why this book is enjoying such an unprecedented level of acclaim.
The subject is the life and career of one of the most revered men in the western hemisphere, Warren Buffett (an advisor to new US President Barack Obama) ? despite the fact that his name may not be known to most of the general public. Buffett?s story is one that currently has resonances for all of us: a remarkable financial success story. The name of this investor from Omaha is spoken of with admiration by all who know him, despite the fact that he has never written a book on his career or the secrets of his business success. However, he has been persuaded to allow Alice Schroeder to spend time with him and those with whom he works to investigate his business triumphs, his opinions, his mistakes (Buffett is rather winning in admitting to several of the latter ? how common is that in his profession?) -- and what emerges is a totally comprehensive biography of the man known throughout the world as ?The Oracle of Omaha?.
What is most revealing about the picture of the man that emerges from these pages (and Schroeder had access not just to her subject and his business associates but also his wife, children and friends) is that we meet a man of intellect ? of course ? but also of humanity and understanding, with a philosphy and worldview that is both judicious and principled. In an era in which those in Buffet?s profession are more prone to excoriation than praise, the man we encounter here has a sane and clear-eyed philosophy of life and an attitude to business success that is generously instructive -- and inspiring. --Barry Forshaw

The tital of the book promised more then what it actually contained. It is very dull, this is one of the very few books I put aside half way through. I like the style in which it is written but that's about it. I cannot imagine how the movie will be like.
A lovely, spellbinding book!

Malcolm X's searing memoir belongs on the small shelf of great autobiographies. The reasons are many: the blistering honesty with which he recounts his transformation from a bitter, self-destructive petty criminal into an articulate political activist, the continued relevance of his militant analysis of white racism, and his emphasis on self-respect and self-help for African Americans. And there's the vividness with which he depicts black popular culture--try as he might to criticize those lindy hops at Boston's Roseland dance hall from the perspective of his Muslim faith, he can't help but make them sound pretty wonderful. These are but a few examples. The Autobiography of Malcolm X limns an archetypal journey from ignorance and despair to knowledge and spiritual awakening. When Malcolm tells coauthor Alex Haley, "People don't realize how a man's whole life can be changed by one book," he voices the central belief underpinning every attempt to set down a personal story as an example for others. Although many believe his ethic was directly opposed to Martin Luther King Jr.'s during the civil rights struggle of the '60s, the two were not so different. Malcolm may have displayed a most un-Christian distaste for loving his enemies, but he understood with King that love of God and love of self are the necessary first steps on the road to freedom. --Wendy Smith

überwältigendes meisterwerk in einzigartigem stil

"let's get free"
A interesting development in a harsh changing world.4.5 STAR
4 Punkte 4 von 5 Punkten
While Malcolm X and I would disagree on a number of things, I really liked this book. The tale of the mans history alone is worth reading even if he wasn't a figure that has effected american culture. Malcolm X was not a stagnant figure he was changing as he learned. He progressed from a huslter to disiciple to a leader and in these transitions he learned to challenge his beliefs and the beliefs of others. Malcolm X was a man who at the time of his death began to challenge the hatered of others and his own hatered.
The second fasinating thing about this book is that the book is told in a real time manner. So that you actaul see the transitions in ideas of X. Huxley did a great job as ghost writer.
The third thing that is great is seeing the interal workings of the nation of islam. I am an atheist yet this was very fasinating to me. I disagree with alot of the nations views on race, but understanding racism starts with understanding the philosophy of the racist and the ignorance that that philosophy premotes. The theroy of the disemiation of races given by the nation is one of the most inconcieveable things I have ever read.
The best analysis of Malcolm X
5 Punkte 5 von 5 Punkten
People have made numerous attempts to analyze, classify and form theories about Malcolm X and what he stood for, forgetting that for someone of his caliber, it is not easy to do this. To even attempt to understand Malcolm X, you would have had to know of his life experiences and how they laid the foundation of what he became. This book gives you that information, and most importantly, it is from his point-of-view. That is why I believe this book gives the best analysis of who Malcolm X was and what he stood for. Malcolm X was one of the most inspiring and articulate leaders that has ever lived and this book is a testament of that. This autobiography is very powerful and for anyone looking to learn more about Malcolm X, I cannot tell you of a better place to start.
Malcolm X; The real story from a real source
5 Punkte 5 von 5 Punkten
Many people know too little about Malcolm X, and what they know is usally one sided or incorrect. This book which is brilliantly written presents the whole life of Malcolm X. It starts from when he was a child facing the racism from locals and the KKK ,and getting sent to a foster home,on through his hustler years and onto become one of the strongest voices in the African American struggle for human and civil rights. Not only does this book captivate the reader but it will present you with a new idea of American history and culture. This is a must read for anyone wanting to find out about one of the strongest voices during the 1960's and to learn more about the all too real problems the were and still are in American today.
Superb
4 Punkte 4 von 5 Punkten
Malcolm X is possibly my favourite figure in North American history (though that isn't saying much ;-) and this book does him justice. While usually I stay clear of autobiographies due to there obviously subjective nature, I made an exception in this case because one of the most interesting aspects of Malcolm X , to me, was his life long intellectual development and the charismatic and powerful way in which he articulated his views. Thus an autobiography is an ideal way to get inside the mind of a person, and trace their line of thought and progress. This book does this superbly, and is both gripping and interesting throughout. It should reveal that calling Malcolm X a 'racist in reverse', would be like condemning Ghandi solely as being 'anti british', i.e. highly simplistic and greatly missing the point.
A further strength to the book is that Alex Haley provides a highly insightful biographical foreword that helps set the scene for those unfamiliar with Malcolm X. The book is at times amusing in it's anecdotes, and some of iconoclastic statements delivered by Malcolm X.
The downside of the book is that, as it is an autobiography, it lacks the third person analysis that a biography would contain, thus it doesn't really analyse issues such as who was really responsible for his assassination. It also rarely describes any media appearances Malcolm X made, thus we miss out on some of the important points Malcolm X made and believed in.
Overall I highly recommend this book, as do nearly all those who have read it.

how the story goes...

In diesem Sinne !

A must have for all fans of rock and the 80's era! The Mötley gang will bring you to your knees!
Sehr unterhaltsam

A Stirring History of Selfless Service Building and Supporting Schools for Youngsters in Afghanistan and Pakistan
5 Punkte 5 von 5 Punkten

"And let our people also learn to maintain good works, to meet urgent needs, that they may not be unfruitful." -- Titus 3:14

Stones into Schools is a book that will change your life: Greg Mortenson impressively demonstrates that by following your heart to do what you can to help those in need, much can be accomplished . . . far beyond your wildest dreams.

The book is beautifully written: The structure and story-telling provide a sense of observing a heroic saga about an epic battle between ignorance and knowledge.

Most importantly, this is a book that can change the world by providing an example of seeking to listen to others, understanding them at the deepest level, selflessly helping to provide what they cannot do for themselves, and trusting that those in need will eventually take care of themselves and others like them.

I hope that many young people will read this book and decide to start up activities that follow a similar path of service to those who are being ignored . . . and need a helping hand.

If you read Three Cups of Tea, you would be foolish to miss this book. The opening briefly recounts those events (to refresh your memory if you didn't read it recently, or to fill in the gaps if you have never read it all). From there, the story mostly moves to Afghanistan as Greg Mortenson and his colleagues from the Central Asia Institute (CAI) seek to keep the promise to bring a school to what may be the most difficult location in that challenged country. If providing schools in remote locations isn't enough, CAI also had to brave the ongoing war there. The story moves into its highest gear as Mr. Mortenson recounts the horrible devastation that a major earthquake (about the same power as the 1906 quake in San Francisco) brought to the mountainous regions, wiping out almost all the schools and killing many of the students and teachers.

In telling the bigger story, you'll be astounded by the ongoing deprivations that teachers, students, and the CAI staff go through to build and support the new schools. This is beyond a labor of love: It's self-sacrifice at a high level for the good of future generations.

As the organization's size and influence have increased, Mr. Mortenson's role has increasingly focused on being the public face of CAI through the books and doing fund-raising speeches. On the ground in Asia, his colleagues have developed an astonishing ability to work wonders. I was left hoping that the organization will be able to attract even more resources so that even more can be done. What a blessing will it be when a third book can be written with a title something like "Schools into Nations."

There's another major theme here: Liberating women from ignorance. When women gain more knowledge, families and communities advance. The book is filled with practical examples of that point.

The book's title alludes to the many deaths that occurred during the last 30 years of war in Afghanistan. As one of the leaders pointed to the rocky hills around him, he noted that there had been as many deaths as there were rocks. But now, the time had come to turn those rocks into schools. In many cases, explosives were actually used to turn boulders into building material for the schools. It's a powerful metaphor that you won't forget.

As the United States ups the military force in Afghanistan, it's good to remember that you can build and staff more than 20 schools in the high mountains there for the cost of one cruise missile. I hope that we get our priorities straight. I was encouraged to read about the interest that many people in the U.S. military have in supporting development of schools in both Afghanistan and Pakistan. Let's hope that is what our legacy will be there.

What can you do to help Central Asia Institute to accomplish more? The book provides answers on pages 405 and 406. Don't skip over that part.

Alles wunderbar!
A very poweful tale of the great injustice put on slaves.

I have read Incidents in the Life of a Slave by Harriet Jacobs, twice! I enjoyed reading her book. Her book is full of rich vocabulary. Her writing skills and the description of events she used was impressive, i.e. the separation of mother and child being sold to slaveholders, I felt the pain. In her writings, she constantly humbled herself because of her circumstances of being a slave and how she felt incompetent to write her life story. I must say that Jacobs did a magnificent job, considering her life of chattel slavery. Besides being courageous, strong and enduring, she was a very wise person. I think Jacob's does not give herself credit for being wise. She was very wise because she had to plan various strategies to outwit her devil master's attempts to capture her. She was wise in not trusting Harriet Beecher Stowe. What was Stowe's purpose of forwarding Jacob's writings to Mrs. Willis, which included her sexual history? Jacobs was no fool. Finally, the most indelible impression on my mind was when she hid in her grandmother's house, above the storage room, for seven years! I was right there with her. Great job Harriet Jacobs!!
This Story Must Be Told Often!

Incidents in the Life Of A Slave Girl is a harrowing, personal experience of a AA female born and raised during the tumultuous, infamous and tragic era of slavery in America's history. Harriett Jacobs, aka Linda Brent, tells in her own voice-one that is explicit and easy to understand-the story of a young woman born into the brutal, horrendous slavery era who later escapes to freedom in the North. Incidents is emotional and the feelings are raw as you experience the tale of a slave who desired freedom so badly that she hid for SEVEN YEARS in a narrow, cramped quarter without much freedom of movement. The story is riveting and moving and shows what an individual is able to accomplish in spite of sex, race and slavery. Incidents is a story of bravery in light of insurmountable circumstances and ones belief that they can succeed in spite of unmeasurable difficulties.
Incidents is an excellent reading selection for a bookgroup and a book that I highly recommend to everyone. Remember the story and share the story so that history doesn't repeat itself.
Excellent Slave History

This book is hard to put down, and hard to pick up. Dramatic recall of her life as a slave and her escape. I love this book and recommend it to anyone wanting to know the truth about life as a female slave.
Excellent for analysis of intersection of race and gender
5 Punkte 5 von 5 Punkten
My theory is that the tension between gender ideology and racial realities is demonstrated by the way escaped bondswoman Harriet Jacobs must tell her tale to pro-abolition Whites in her Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl: Written by Herself (writing as Linda Brent) (edited by Lydia Maria Francis Child) (introduction by Jean Fagan Yellin) (Cambridge, MA: Harvard U. Press, 1987) (1861). At the time Jacobs wrote, popular culture defined femininity based on chastity and child rearing. But Jacobs was writing about experiences of sexual assault not encountered by most White women. In order to establish credibility with that audience, Jacobs goes to great pains to describe both her attempts to prevent her owner from raping her and her desire to care for her children.
